2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Smiths Station finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Smiths Station finished sixth in Class 7A region two with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Smiths Station took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2011. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense allowed a team record 349 points last season. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Smiths Station averaged scoring just 11.9 points a game. Since 2010, Smiths Station has gone a combined 39-35. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 7A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Smiths Station has managed to compile a record of 139-139. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 7A and 193rd in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Adam Fossett who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Smiths Station. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Fossett. Coach Fossett's overall record as a head football coach in nine season stands at 55-44 (55.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Fossett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won one region championship. The Smiths Station Panthers will play in Class 7A region two during the 2017 season. The Panthers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 74-44 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 7A and 12th in the AHSAA. The Panthers enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Panthers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just 2 wins last year, Smiths Station will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Opelika on Friday, August 25 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Opelika Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 6A region three. The Bulldogs lost in the Class 6A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Ramsay. They final score was 21-16 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Smiths Station and Opelika have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 2-23-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2013 with Smiths Station winning by a score of 3-0. College prospects include: Deondrae Williams (6-1, 235) defensive end, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
